Exercise 8 Current Awareness Post

Automated Book Delivery System and Virtual Browse

This YouTube Video show the robot collect and delivery books in the James B. Hunt Jr. Library. In my opinion, this is surely a dream come true.

Libraries will develop towards high technology, digitization and networking to embrace the future. And now the Macquarie University Library are currently using the similar system which is called The Automated Retrieval Collection (ARC) System. This automated collection system will take very a short time to collect the books, instead take half a hour to collect by library staffs, so it can save the time and improve the work more efficiently.

Exercise 7 Podcasts

Podcasts in Libraries

I found this Podcast,  Ebooks 2/7/2011, from the CHarles Sturt University Library website.
This Audio Podcast talk about how to borrow Ebooks in Charles Sturt University Library. And this website also provides the transcript of this article. It is very helpful and convenient for students to get information in the library.

Exercise 6 Social Bookmarking

Social Bookmarking

In the State Library of Tasmania catalogue, it allows customers write his personal reviews online on the book they have used and the reviews will be attached to this book's catalogue. When another user search for the same book, and the review will come up, so the user can read these reviews fist, and then decide to continually read this book or not.
I consider this hommization service is very convenient for users. It is very helpful for the borrowers to get a overall impression or other previous reader's critical opinions on this book before he borrow. And then make his own decision to borrow this book or not, so it can save the reader's time and make his work more efficiently.
I think every library should imitate the Tasmania Library to provide this service.  My local public library, Hurstrville library provide this service currently.

Exercise 5 Social Networking

The important of library:
  • Research shows the highest achieving students attend schools with well-staffed and well-funded library media centers.
  • Americans go to school, public and academic libraries nearly three times more ofter than they go to the movies.
  • A 2009 poll condcuted for the American Library Assocaition found that 96% respondents agreed that public libraries play an important role in giving everyone a chance to succeed because it provides free access to material and resources.
Social Networking is the future for many different activities for libraries.
  • Social Networking is the digital door for libraries. Libraries can use Social Networking in the library activities, such as Marketing and Publicising. Libary can promote their events or activities to the young generations.
  • Because in the social networking, All the menbers has been divided into many menbership or groups depends on many criterias such as interests, age, gender, location, libraries can utilize this to aim to its target population to make its work more efficiently.
  • Librarise are probably experiencing a rapid big change in the historical revulution that trandistional libraries are transforming  into digital libraries. So libraries embrance the younger generations.
  • Libraries are going to global digital and netwok world is historical trendency. Using Fackbook, Twitter, Flicker, let itself keep pace with the times. A lots of libraris already did that includes many local libraris and Australian National Library.

Exercise 4 Youtube

Like father, like son

This a a short promotional video which was produced by The Finnish Library Association Association  to celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2010. On the occasion of the anniversary The Finnish Library Association wants to promote the important role of the libraries  in the transmitting cultural upbringing to the next generations. The video is 30 seconds long, it talks about a young father heard his son's happy laughter when he was reading a book in his bed. Then he got to to find out why, and discovered his baby son was reading a graphic children's book and laughing.
It is very funning.

Exercise 3 Photo sharing and Flickr

Seattle Central Library

I found 11 pictures of the Seattle Central Library by the photographer, Channel Kev. This library is one of my favourite modern architectures around the world.

The Seattle Central Library opened in 2004 and was designed by Rem Koolhaas of OMA in a joint venture with LMN Architects and Front Inc. Facade Consultants. In 2007, the building was voted on the American Institute of Architects' (AIA) list of Americans' 150 favourite structures in the U.S. The building received a 2005 national AIA Honor Award for Architecture.

Exercise 2 Slideshare

This is a good "Training Library Staff" presentation on Slideshare.
It is a presentation for the the conference of Philippine Women College on the topic of "Emerging Landscape, Mindscape and Netscape of Philippin Books, Information Sciece and Technology for Quality Services". It is good for trainning library staffs.

Exercise 1 Investigative Blogs

I like this article from the  "Library in black" blog. The inventions which are introduced in this site are very creativity. I like these gadgets very much. This website discusses about how certain libraries are moving to embrace the online world, and traditional libraris are going in dark. So every librarians should keep on developing theirself to catch up with the time.
